GovTracker: About the Project
GovTracker: Taking Action to Make Government Accountable is aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and civic engagement across Nigeria. The project empowers young people, community leaders, and civil society actors with the knowledge and tools to monitor government budgets and expenditures effectively.
Through a combination of training, digital advocacy, and the development of practical resources, GovTracker provides citizens with simplified access to complex fiscal data, enabling them to understand how public funds are managed and to demand responsible governance. The program includes the creation of a user-friendly Toolkit on Budgeting, Transparency, and Accountability, a two-month Transparency and Accountability Fellowship for youth across Nigeria’s 36 states, and community step-down training sessions to extend learning to the grassroots.
Our Impact
- Developed an accessible Toolkit that simplifies government budgeting and expenditure information, helping citizens at all literacy levels engage with public finance processes.
- Trained 36 young leaders—one from each Nigerian state—through an intensive virtual fellowship focused on public finance, social accountability, and digital advocacy.
- Conducted step-down training across 36 states, where fellows trained local citizens, youth organizations, women’s groups, and persons with disabilities on budget literacy and civic participation.
- Reached over 500,000 citizens online through a multilingual social media campaign that promoted transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance.
- Increased civic knowledge and engagement, with more citizens now able to analyze budgets, track public projects, and hold government officials accountable for public spending.
- Strengthened youth leadership in governance, enabling fellows to establish local advocacy initiatives such as community budget watch clubs and civic education forums.
- Fostered collaboration among civic organizations, governance experts, and public interest groups, creating a stronger ecosystem for open government and democratic accountability.
Why It Matters
GovTracker addresses one of Nigeria’s most pressing governance challenges: the gap between citizens and government transparency. Many citizens lack the knowledge or access to understand public budgets, track spending, or question decisions that affect their communities. By equipping youth and local actors with practical tools, GovTracker bridges this gap, transforming civic education into civic action. It nurtures a culture of accountability, inclusion, and participation—laying the foundation for a more transparent and responsive government that serves the people effectively.
